Under UK REACH, Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) must align with the Great Britain (GB) CLP Regulation and contain accurate chemical hazard information to ensure safe use while enabling users to take necessary measures

In line with Article 31 of UK REACH, the supplier placing the substance or mixture on the market is responsible for ensuring that an SDS is prepared and provided when required.

Chemleg’s UK REACH SDS Preparation services ensure that your SDSs meet the requirements of the UK REACH Regulation.

When Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Must be Provided?

An SDS must be provided where a substance or mixture is placed on the GB market and meets any of the following conditions, in accordance with Article 31 of UK REACH:

    • The substance or mixture is classified as hazardous in accordance with GB CLP.
    • The substance is persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) or very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB) in accordance with the criteria set out in Annex XIII of UK REACH.
    • The substance is included in the Candidate List established under Article 59(1) of UK REACH.

    • An SDS must also be provided upon request where a mixture is not classified as hazardous, but contains at least one substance that meets any of the following criteria:

    • At least one substance posing human health or environmental hazards present at an individual concentration of:

        • ≥ 1.0 % by weight for non-gaseous mixtures, or
        • ≥ 0.2 % by volume for gaseous mixtures

    • Present at an individual concentration of ≥ 0.1 % by weight (non-gaseous mixtures), and classified as:

        • Carcinogenic, Category 2,
        • Toxic for reproduction, Category 1A, 1B, or 2,
        • Skin sensitizer, Category 1,
        • Respiratory sensitiser, Category 1,
        • Having effects on or via lactation,
        • PBT or vPvB in accordance with Annex XIII, or
        • Included in the Candidate List under Article 59(1) for reasons other than PBT/vPvB.

Requirements of a UK REACH SDS

    • The safety data sheet should enable users to take the necessary measures relating to protection of human health and safety at the workplace, and protection of the environment. While authoring  SDS; it should be taken into account that a safety data sheet must inform its audience of the hazards of a substance or a mixture and provide information on the safe storage, handling and disposal of the substance or the mixture.

    • Where a Chemical Safety Report (CSR) is required, the information provided in the SDS must be consistent with the CSR.

    • Relevant exposure scenarios must be included as an annex to the e-SDS.

    • The information in the SDS must be written clearly and precisely, avoiding jargon, abbreviations, and acronyms.

    • SDS must not indicate any statements that are inconsistent with classification.

    • Under UK REACH, Article 31, safety data sheets provided for substances or mixtures placed on the Great Britain market must be supplied in English. Supplying the SDS in additional languages is permitted, but this does not replace the obligation to provide the English version.

    • There is no fixed length for an SDS; its length must be proportional to the hazards of the substance or mixture and to the available information.

    • The compilation date of the SDS must be indicated on the first page.

    • When a SDS is revised, the changes must be brought to the recipient’s attention in Section 16 if it has not indicated elsewhere.

    • Revised SDSs must show the date and version number on the first page, noted as “Revision: (date)”.

      Frequently Asked Questions

What are the formal requirements of a UK REACH SDS?

The length of the SDS must be proportionate to the hazards of the substance or mixture and to the available information. All pages, including annexes, must be numbered and must contain an indication of the total number of pages or that the document continues. The language of SDS must be clear, simple and precise.

Changes in a revised SDS must be presented in Section 16 or should be indicated elsewhere in SDS.

According to the UK REACH, a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) does not have a fixed validity period or legally established “expiration date.” What makes an SDS “valid” is the accuracy and up-to-dateness of the information it contains.
